Building on Minnesota's Momentum
The 2013-2014 legislatives session was an incredibly productive one for the people of Minnesota.
When the 2013 session began, Minnesota faced a $600 million deficit and owed our schools more than $800 million. Property taxes were on steady rise. We took the state in a different direction, investing in hardworking families and middle-class Minnesotans by:
- Paying back the money borrowed from our schools.
- Making historic investments in education, from early childhood to college.
- Reducing property taxes for middle-class Minnesotans.
- Growing our economy and creating more jobs.
- Helping turn our budget deficit into a surplus.
Minnesota has a momentum, but there is more work to be done to ensure we keep our state and community headed in the right direction and our middle class strong. I look forward to spending this summer and fall visiting with you about how we keep Minnesota moving forward.

Fighting for Minnesotans
HISTORIC INVESTMENTS IN EDUCATION
Rep. Schoen made good on his commitment to pay back the money owed to our schools and voted to make historic investments in education -- including all-day kindergarten for every Minnesota child. Rep. Schoen also voted for the largest financial aid increase in a generation, including a tuition freeze at Minnesota state colleges and universities to help Minnesota students pay for college.
LOWER TAXES FOR MIDDLE-CLASS MINNESOTANS
Thanks to the direct property tax relief passed by the Legislature in 2013 and 2014, Minnesotans will be paying less property taxes statewide for the first time in more than a decade. Rep. Schoen also voted to use a significant portion of the 2014 budget surplus to cut taxes for more than a million Minnesotans.
A Progressive Champion
A STRONG ECONOMY AND MORE JOBS
More than 50,000 jobs have been created in Minnesota since the 2013 session began, which means all of the jobs lost during the Great Recession have been recovered. Rep. Schoen helped build on this progress with new investments proven to spur middle class job creation, such as job training initiatives and incentives for business expansions.
ECONOMIC SECURITY FOR WOMEN AND THEIR FAMILIES
Rep. Schoen was a proud supporter of the Women's Economic Security Act, which promotes equal pay for equal work, enhances protections for victims of domestic violence, strengthens workplace protections for women -- including pregnant women and new mothers -- and helps women learn skills in high-wage jobs where women are underrepresented.
